Animated States

Most of you know how much Caleb enjoys drawing, coloring, crafts...
The other day he was in his room for over an hour just coloring away.
I peeked in on him once in awhile and the last time I looked, he had taped each picture
on his wall. This is not unusual...there is usually a large collection of his artwork on his walls. I finally gave up on not allowing him to do this...he is much to proud of his pictures to have them in a pile! He said...'mom, sit down on the floor...I have a play for you'! So, I sat down and quickly realized what he was so busy drawing...
He had his map puzzle and book out and was copying the different states and writing their names on each piece of paper...thankfully he stopped at about 20 states! He had quite the animated play for me about the United States...so funny!

What is that thing in the water?!

Jon and I took the boys to Lake Alvin last week. They boys were happily playing in the water and Jon and I were having some much needed uninterrupted adult conversation (hard to come by these days)! Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a dark shadow traveling through the water toward shore. I asked Jon what he thought it was. We concluded that it must be a school of small fish and decided to play a little joke on Caleb. We said, 'hey Caleb, look over there...what do you think that is...is it a seaweed monster'? He was of course soooo curious (Curious George is a favorite of his for a reason)! He tried to get a look at it from shore and then got brave enough to walk through the water toward it. We decided to 'scare' him a bit with it...so funny! We will have to bring a little butterfly or fish net the next time we visit this lake so that they can catch a few fish to check them out up close!

Park Exploration

Jon did a little exploring on his way home from work the other day and discovered a beautiful state park just 1/2 hour away. He told me about it and we thought the boys would enjoy exploring the area. So we left Saturday morning... We made our first stop at Palisades State Park. There were quite a few hiking trails and beautiful natural rock formations and canyons along the river. When we arrived, Caleb ran to the area above right away. Before this area, there is a grassy bluff complete with a sign and free doggy waste bags. Well, someone must not know how to read or else doesn't care about their doggy waste, but Caleb managed the find the one dog log that a careless owner did not pick up. Just as he was heading for it Jon was just about to tell him to not run through there, but too late! Not fast enough dad! Josh was still in the parking lot and was circling around and babbling to himself. Just as Jon got done helping Caleb clean off his shoes in the grass, Josh seemed to have stealth doggy log sonar and left his circles in the parking lot behind and headed straight for the dog log! What are the chances in a huge park that both boys managed to head for the mess! All this happened while I was in the bathroom. Amazing! After we got the boys shoes all cleaned up, we had a great time!

This was the entrance to a hiking trail. Caleb LOVED exploring the area. Josh loves the outdoors and had a fun time too. There were a lot of rocky cliffs along the river, so Josh had to hold Dad's hand most of the time. He did not like that much because he wants to do everything
'myself'!!

The trails were beautiful but a little muddy. It rained about 1 1/2 inches the night before. The boys did not want to leave, but we had a pontoon ride reserved at 11 AM.

We all loved the pontoon ride through Split Rock Canyon. This was a lower grassy area in the picture, but the cliffs soon to come were amazing. We even saw a waterfall, a rare thing in July apparently. This has been such a wet summer that there was plenty of water for it to flow.

After the pontoon ride we drove down the road to see where Jessie James jumped the canyon to get away after a train robbery. I am amazed that his horse was brave enough to make the jump...it was quite a distance! We hiked around the area a bit and then had a picnic lunch.

On Sunday, they had a children's concert at a local park. Josh was very happy to play in the dirt with his cars and listen to music...

Caleb enjoyed going up front to dance to a few songs. He managed to find a dance partner too!!

Caleb's Quotes

Caleb enjoys playing 'teacher' and being a 'teacher' to others...especially Joshua and the 'invisible audience' in his room. In fact, the other day at swim lessons, Caleb was helping his classmate, Lyndsey, blow bubbles in the water. The teacher was taking one of the other kids out to swim and when she came back to Caleb and heard what he was doing she said "maybe I should go home and let him teach the class...sounds like he has this all figured out"! Anyway, back to teaching Joshua or an 'invisible audience' in his room... He has really enjoyed the little CD player from Aunt Sarah that we put in his room. He is always playing music or books on CD and just coloring and drawing away. The other day I was making lunch and I could hear him in his room with his 'invisible audience'. He was listening to a song about Noah's Ark, drawing diagrams and talking about how much God loves everyone. He said, "God loves everyone and he also really loves dogs, because God spelled backward is dog"! He had the words God and dog on his paper along with pictures of other things that God loves. It is so funny to hear the things that he comes up with!

Wal Mart Woes

Mom's Little 'Angels'!

Jon has been taking Josh on bike rides to several nearby parks the last two weeks while I take Caleb to his swim lesson. We knew that Josh would not understand why he could not get in the pool too, so we figured it was best this way and then Jon could get some one on one time with Josh...which is rare! Jon had something going on last night, so I took both boys to Caleb's final lesson. Anyway, I made it through the lesson without Josh either falling in the pool or having an issue over not being able to get in the pool...whew! After the lesson, Caleb got his certificate and he did so well...he made it to level 4!

I had something to return to Wal Mart, so I decided to stop by there on the way home. I am not sure what Caleb was on...he did not have any sugary treats, so I think it was pure adrenaline and excitement...but I have never seen him so hyper!! Josh is at the age now where he copies everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that Caleb does...he is like his little shadow! So...I did not just have hyper Caleb, but mimicking hyper Josh too! I have never been so embarrassed in a store before! Caleb was running around like a wild child...and so was Josh. They seem to have gone deaf too...hyperactivity must do that to you!? Anyway, I returned my item in the usual speedy Wal Mart fashion (not really)! I should have just taken a clue not to try and pick up a few things that I needed, but I threw caution to the wind and thought...surely they will listen to me after the talk that we had in the return section! I got a few school supplies for Caleb and while I looked at a few things, they proceeded to make trumpets out of gift wrap ribbon, touch every package of markers, crayons and glue, and even run off into the next isle while I looked away for a split second. I had more shopping to do, but I decided that it was time to go and we checked out. I thought I was in the clear, but Caleb somehow thought he was deserving of a gumball on the way out and I said "no way...are you kidding me"!? Apparently, that was not the answer that he was hoping to hear and he decided to have a tantrum going out the door (and Josh, once again copied him). I then decided to walk at a faster clip to avoid too many stares from all those parents with 'perfect kids'. I was only about 5 cars away from our car in the parking lot and Caleb totally bit it...just fell...whack...right in the parking lot. He does have a tendency to trip over nothing. So, Josh, being the copycat that he is, flopped down in the parking lot as well. At this point, I lost my last precious grain of patience and picked up Josh and told Caleb that "if you had actually had your eyes open and you were not jumping around hysterically, maybe you could walk a little better"! Whew, was I glad to get them both in the car and buckled in! Needless to say, if I had had any idea that my stop at Wal Mart was going to be so 'eventful' I would have held off on my return and 4.00 purchase...so not worth it!
On the way home I counted to ten, took a few deep breaths and was thankful that episodes like this are few and far between!

Happy 2nd Birthday Joshua!

Happy 2nd Birthday Joshy!!
We noticed how much Joshua enjoyed playing in the sand and in the water over the 4th of July at Uncle Dan & Aunt Julie's place. So...we figured that a lake would be a fun outing for Josh & Caleb for Josh's birthday. We took them to Wall Lake, only about 1/2 hour away and did they have fun! It was a bit windy, but they did not mind at all. We were there for about 3 1/2 hours and they could have stayed longer! We brought a picnic lunch and chased our food around the park! Caleb spent most of the time in the water and Josh spent most of the time driving his bulldozer in the sand. I think we will definitely go back again!
After the lake, we came home and opened some gifts. Josh is enjoying all of his gifts...most of them have wheels...so that is always a hit!
After gifts and dinner, we had cupcakes that Caleb helped to decorate. Josh was actually able to blow out his number 2 candle with no help...mom was ready to help if needed! We gave Caleb his own candle on his cupcake to help avoid any unwanted help!!
On Sunday we turned on the sprinkler system and they had so much fun running from sprinkler to sprinkler. This picture is especially funny...it looks like Josh is 'spraying' Caleb!!!

Joshua's First Haircut

We decided that it was time to sheer all the long locks off of little Joshy on Friday. We bought a clipper kit, set him up on a stool that he could not get off of easily and put on a Curious George show to distract him. Thankfully he did not seem to mind the clippers and we got through the whole cut with very little resistance! Jon and I both clipped away and it turned out pretty well! He definitely lost a little of his baby look and really looks like a big boy now! All ready for his 2 year birthday on Saturday!

Swimming Lessons

Caleb started swimming lessons this week and he LOVES it! This is his first summer of lessons, and he is really doing well. He has no problems blowing bubbles, dunking his head and holding his breath for 5 seconds, floating on his back, kicking with his legs straight and toes pointed, and jumping into the pool. He has always been a little water bug, so we are not surprised that he is progressing so well. Joshua, on the other hand, is not so fond of water in the face, so we will see how he does next summer!
